Here's how I found out "the truth" as a kid: scientific thinking right from the beginning. I kept bugging my mum why Christkind (which is supposed to be angel-baby-Jesus) is a girl when Jesus clearly was a boy (wasn't yet into gender bending back then) until she gave up and told me.
